Menopause in the news
Finally, menopause is in the news! This last month has seen an explosion of articles exposing the truth about menopause.
The question is why is this taking so long? Menopause, and its forerunner, perimenopause is a natural process. It has existed since the inception of humankind. It has been called the “second puberty”, in other words, just another hormone transition. We have been talking, preparing, honoring puberty forever. How many of us remember learning about menstruation in elementary school? Maybe this transition was not celebrated as it should have been, but at least the mystery of puberty was debunked.
Unfortunately not so about menopause. For some reason, it is seen as a taboo topic. As a result, people are ashamed, they hide symptoms, they suffer in silence avoiding possible treatments that can both prolong their lives as well as their quality of life.
Well, let’s lift the shroud, the shame, the silence. It is time to take a menopause positive view. I am delighted with the prospect that menopause could be moving toward being mainstreamed. I plan to post pro-menopause articles on my site to share with you. Let’s start with the New York Times. In the last week, they published three fabulous articles about menopause! Hip hip hooray! I hope you will read them here:
How to Recognize and Treat Perimenopause and Menopause Symptoms by Dani Blum https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/29/well/perimenopause-menopause-symptoms.html
Why is Perimenopause Still Such a Mystery by Jessica Grose. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/29/well/perimenopause-women.html
Why Modern Medicine Keeps Overlooking Menopause by Lisa Selin Davis https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/06/us/menopause-perimenopause-symptoms.html
Let’s work to help people recognize menopause for what it is, a normal life event, and help people get the care they need to live a healthy and fulfilling life.
All my best,
Susan
